Word of the Weird: Wednesday June 20th 2012 A Ghost Did It!

So I have decided that every Wednesday, I am going to write an article where I bring you Word of the Weird happenings that involve some sort of ‘paranormal’ angle.  And this week’s stories are no different.  So apparently, in January of this year, the Fond du Lac county Sherriff’s department (WI) responded to a domestic violence call.  When they arrived they found a woman who claimed that her husband, Michael West (41), attempted to choke her several times and then struck her in the face when she tried to call the police.   West made up some lie or other about his wife falling down causing the injuries.  When questioned further, he finally admitted the truth.  A ghost did it!  Surprisingly, not a single person believed him (note the sarcasm).  West has been known for his violent outbursts in the past and his wife had even had a previous ‘No Contact’ order filed against him.
Huffington Post had this to say:
Alexandra Holzer, a second-generation ghost researcher and HuffPost blogger, says West's alibi, while highly unusual, could be possible, but admits his "shady, checkered spousal abusive past" makes her skeptical.

The Old Abandoned Mental Institute: Western Alabama

This is a highly popular, well known location that I've investigated many times, located in the western area of Alabama. This is a very old building built in the 1800's. It housed many African American “patients” though most were not mentally ill. They were placed in the hospital after the Civil War because they had nowhere else to go. There is a large field that was formerly cotton. The patients used to work the field as a form of recreation and to have material with which to make their clothes. As is the fate of many older historic buildings such as this, vandalism has proven to be its demise. The roof has been burned off by vandals, which has allowed the weather to hasten the deterioration of this once gorgeous building. It is also heavily damaged by graffiti. Doors and windows have been kicked in and thrown about. Although this is a popular, well known location, Southern Ghost Society will refrain from mentioning its true name to prevent further vandalism.

A New Way to Approach EVPs...Maybe

I ran across this article earlier on another blog and was fascinated by it. Excelltech Mobile has created an app for the iPhone and iPad which allegedly assists in recording EVPs.
According to developer Ed Williams, paranormal phenomenon is most often reported with abnormal electromagnetic fields. "The Paranormal Recorder uses raw, magnetic data from the device's digital compass to trigger audio recording," he said. "The electronic voice phenomenons, or EVPs, are caused by electromagnetic fluctuations, which reflect paranormal forces that occur during these communications."

That which goes BUMP in the night.

I've been asked by several people, why do hauntings mostly happen at night? And I always tell them the same thing. They don't. They happen during the daytime as well. The speaker usually acts skeptical until I explain.  At night, there is less going on to distract you and you are more aware of activity.  During the day you can explain odd sounds away as, the children playing, the neighbors next door or a loved one in the next room.  At night, you are hyper-aware of your surroundings due to movies and TV shows that show home invasions or, with the advent of all the ghost hunting shows,  paranormal activity.  Add to that the fact that you are very aware of every sound in your home, hoping it doesn't wake the kids, or worse, it's not actually ONE of the kids getting up sick.  You move quietly through the darkness of your home, respectful of those that are sleeping, and that's when you are more aware of noises and activity.  And, take into account that most people are put off by the dark anyway, so you have a moment that is RIPE for heart-pounding fear.

NJ Couple Sues Landlord Over an Allegedly Haunted House

Our first video. :-)  This is old news but I wanted to post it anyway just because I find this story so ridiculous.  Watch this video and what LITTLE evidence they actually show.  Granted I know the video is very short, but still... Hope you enjoy.  If you know more about this case or would like to comment on it, please do so in the comments section.

Oh, and the anchorman reporting this story seems to be a little to happy over this story.  Watch him and see.
