What is a Residual Haunting?

Residual Ghosts
I have seen a lot of investigators throw the term residual around without a true definition of the term or a real understanding.  I have looked over different articles and have found peoples conclusions on this subject differ drastically.  So what I write is based on my investigations, observations and years of study.
----------------------------------------------------
1st Question - What is a residual haunting?

Some Investigators assume something is residual if other people have heard or seen it and they can't get it to react to them.  So in ignorance they say it’s residual.  Residual as a basic term is something that lingers or repeats.  Where some energy or imprint is left and can be sensed or seen, usually at a specific time or doing a specific function. It may not always be a human; it can be an animal or simply a sound, smell or a recurring image or dream.
If it is a ghost, then in these events the residual image is usually seen performing a task in an almost ritualistic fashion, either unaware or unconcerned that they are being viewed.  In most cases there is little, if any interaction between the two participants. A residual ghost appears at the same time and place over   and over. It may appear nightly, weekly, or even yearly; but whenever it appears it repeats the same patterns observed on previous sightings.  You may hear footsteps creaking up the stairs every night at 3:00 A.M. or hear children's laughter every Saturday at 3:00 P.M. It can also be reports of sightings of soldiers on a battlefield or a lady drawing water from a well.
A lot of researchers assume that a residual is rare.  I think it is rare that a person can truly see ghosts, but to one who can, residual energy, be it a ghost or another form is not rare.  We may not always be able to identify it correctly, but we pick up on it right away.
From my standpoint, residual ghosts are almost completely harmless and are nothing to be afraid of. Because there is no real entity or spirit with a will behind it.  The most it could do to harm you is scaring you or perhaps, rarely shoving you out of its way to complete the task it was doing.

Question 2 What Causes a residual Ghost?

There are many theories as to what causes something to become a residual and I believe they are mostly full of crap.  It is said that some accident or events full of anxiety or stress can cause an event to repeat.  That may be true.  But little granny who was happy as could be sitting in her rocker every night watching ‘Little House on the Prairie’ passes away and even though she's gone, the rocker still rocks every night at the same time.  There was no anger or stress.  Then why does it repeat?  I believe it has to do with stored kinetic energy.  If energy or a pattern repeats itself, especially where the energy cannot escape then it will just loop and conform to the pattern it is used to.
The residual ghost does not interact with those around it. It seems to be oblivious to your presence and continues with its nightly travels whether or not you are there to observe it.
Most residual hauntings occur in locations that have been built over limestone, quartz, or water. It is believed that natural rock formations play a major role in the formation of a residual image. Buildings made of bricks and stones are also known to harbor residual ghosts.  It seems that any building made with more natural walls and foundations seems to be capable of harboring more ‘memories’.

3. How do you stop a residual haunting?

This is the hardest of the questions.  Since I've never tried to do this or known anyone who has successfully done this, then I will give you theories of how to stop a residual haunting.
First thing is to try to find out if the haunting is tied to a person, an object, the building or the land itself. Since there are many types of residual hauntings it’s almost impossible to cover every type.  If the haunting is a residual person and you can somehow shock them into becoming aware of their actions, then they or their energy will usually change or move on.

1. It would be easiest to just remove the object.
2. If you don't wish to do that then cleanse the object.  I would do this with Sea Salt and a freshly squeezed lemon.  It may break the attachment any spirit has to it.
3. Have it blessed. Try to do this by someone of the same faith as the residual haunt, if you know this.
4. Seal the object inside a special cloth or box with Sea Salt.  Of course if the item is a piano, then this isn't practical.
5. Surround the object with salt or some type of barrier that the residual will have to stop and think. This may snap the energy out of its normal pattern.
6. If it’s an object like a door always closing or a light always turning on then I would get a different door or a different light fixture and start there.  If that's not it, like the door, change the door frame.  Could be someone always stood in the door frame or maybe had an exercise apparatus set up in the frame and what’s making the noise is their energy that is still present. Start out with what you can change and go from there.
If it’s the land then there's not a lot you can do.  It is possible to put up a metaphysical or shall we say ‘paranormal’ barrier around your house and land that will cast out and keep out anyone not of your household.  I have no clue if this would work with a residual or not.
A true residual haunting is harmless; they will never intentionally do anything to harm you, hurt you or bother you.  That is the basic theory that is correct 99 % of the time.  Though we know better than to say ‘always’ and ‘every time’.  A residual haunting is like your DVR kicking on and playing the same scene over and over again at a certain time or date.  If it’s something you can’t get rid of, or something that is harmless, then your best bet is to ignore it and hope that eventually the energy winds itself down and somehow gets ‘deleted’.
